Proofreading – Starts at 1.5 cents per word

Proofreading, AKA, pointing out typos to fix. This is the last call to fix any errors so that a pesky “their” that is supposed to be spelled “there” doesn’t make its way into your book for readers to scoff at.

Usually at this stage of the game the manuscript is formatted, so it looks exactly how it will look when it comes off the printer (or onto the e-reader screen). In the past, a proofreader was always given the copy edited manuscript as well as the formatted document and they would compare the two to see if all the changes were implemented correctly. Now, however, it is becoming more common for proofreaders to receive only the formatted document.
